Why You Should Outsource Your Spreadsheet Creation

Before I tell you why you should outsource your spreadsheet creation, there are times that you should do it yourself. Those times are few and far between but, if either of these criteria are met, even I would say that it is best to make your spreadsheets in-house.

1. You have a genuine spreadsheet specialist on staff (not just someone who says they ‘know Excel’). Making spreadsheets is part of that expert’s job description, and they have the time to do so.

2. You have so much time on your hands, you don’t need to make money, and you want to spend time making spreadsheets.

Professional spreadsheet consultants, like myself, make spreadsheets all day on most days. We know more than most people, because we make different types of spreadsheets all the time and we are learning all the time. We’re not just using the same one, like most staff members, so we have more versatility. We are most probably better at making spreadsheets, and most likely quicker too.

People often ask my hourly rate and, to be quite honest, it really doesn’t matter. I will quote per project, so it doesn’t matter how long it takes to make. That way, you know what price you’re in for, and you can decide whether it’s worth it for you or not. Ask yourself this question: if you were to make the spreadsheet, how long would it take you, and what is your hourly rate? If it would cost you more to make it, than I charge, why would you not use me?

More ideas and suggestions

A consultant is independent and can bring some good ideas to the table. I deal with loads of businesses and create spreadsheets for all sorts of applications. I almost never follow the client’s initial specifications. I always offer advice and suggestions, to mould the client’s specifications, to ensure the best product.
